The newly introduced banknotes featuring the portrait of King Charles are not yet universally accepted across the UK. For instance, ticket machines in Glasgow’s metro system do not accept these notes, requiring passengers to use the cash register instead.
Since Wednesday, the public has been able to encounter banknotes bearing the image of King Charles, which now appear on the 5, 10, 20, and 50 pounds denominations. This marks the second time a British monarch’s portrait has been featured on banknotes, following Queen Elizabeth II, Charles’ mother, who passed away two years ago.
Glasgow Subway has issued a notice stating,
“Please note that our ticket machines cannot accept the new banknotes with King Charles. If you wish to pay with one, please proceed to the cash register.” The exact timeline for when these new notes will be compatible with ticket machines remains unclear.
As the new banknotes are gradually introduced into circulation, they will be relatively rare in everyday transactions. Additionally, the use of cash has significantly declined in recent years. The existing notes featuring Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be valid until they need to be replaced.
