Robinhood, a leading fintech platform (NASDAQ: HOOD), has made a significant move in 2024 by announcing its acquisition of Bitstamp, a prominent UK-based crypto exchange. The all-cash deal, valued at over $200 million, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025. This strategic acquisition will enhance Robinhood’s existing crypto offerings, which currently provide limited access to cryptocurrencies through its mobile and online trading platforms. In addition to crypto trading, Robinhood offers a range of financial services, including stock and option trading, high-interest banking, and its recently launched Robinhood credit card.
Founded in 2011, Bitstamp is one of the largest and most reputable crypto exchanges in Europe, boasting over 50 licenses, 85 listed spot cryptocurrencies, and a global customer base of several million. This acquisition is poised to significantly expand Robinhood’s presence in Europe and other international markets. The company has already begun its expansion into the UK, having launched its brokerage services in December. The move is seen as a strategic response to the regulatory environment in the United States, which has prompted many crypto companies, such as Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN), to explore international markets with clearer government regulations.
The news of the acquisition sent Robinhood’s shares soaring by 6.5% on Thursday, capping off a remarkable year for the company. Since early 2024, Robinhood’s stocks have surged by more than 85%, driven in part by the resurgence of the crypto bull market and the record-breaking performance of the S&P 500 and NASDAQ.
