British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has filed a lawsuit against biotechnologist BioNTech and pharmaceutical company Pfizer in the United States, alleging infringement of patents related to mRNA (messenger RNA) technology, which has played a crucial role in the development of COVID-19 vaccines.
mRNA technology involves using synthetic strands of genetic material to instruct cells in the body to produce specific proteins, triggering an immune response against diseases. This innovative approach has revolutionized vaccine development, offering a faster and more adaptable method compared to traditional vaccine production techniques.
GSK asserts that its patent rights cover technological advancements made “more than ten years” before the onset of the pandemic, providing the foundation for Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccines.
The technology encompassed by GSK’s patents forms the backbone of Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine development. GSK states through a spokesperson its willingness to grant licenses “under commercially reasonable terms” to ensure continued patient access to the vaccines.
In addition to seeking compensation, the British company has petitioned the American court for damages, the specific amount of which remains undisclosed. Pfizer has expressed its intent to “defend” against GSK’s allegations.
This legal dispute is part of a broader landscape of lawsuits concerning mRNA technology patents, with Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna also embroiled in similar litigation.
