House of Lords Rejects Sunak’s Appeal to Expedite Rwanda Plan

The House of Lords has thwarted British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s pledge to commence the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda in the spring, as reported by The Guardian. Despite the approval of the proposal by the House of Commons on Wednesday evening, members of the House of Lords have intervened.

On Thursday, Sunak implored members of the British House of Lords to swiftly endorse his asylum legislation, asserting that it reflects “the will of the people.” However, his statements appeared to have a counterproductive effect. Members of the House of Lords criticized Sunak’s words as “bizarre,” “contentless,” and “foreign,” opting to establish a two-month timetable to scrutinize the bill.

Angela Smith, the Labour Party leader in the House of Lords, commented to The Guardian, stating, “Sunak’s press conference was bizarre. I don’t think he has any idea how the House of Lords works. We adhere to our customary procedures to pass this bill.” A final vote on the bill is scheduled for March 12.
