Google Commits $1B to Cutting-Edge Data Center in Waltham Cross

Google is channelling a substantial $1B investment into the establishment of an expansive 33-acre data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.

The purpose of this state-of-the-art data centre is to augment computing power capacity in the UK, catering to the needs of customers and fostering advancements in artificial intelligence. Google aims to provide reliable digital services to its Google Cloud customers and other users in the UK and beyond.

Distinguished by its commitment to sustainability, the new data centre aligns with Google’s strategy to achieve complete CO2 neutrality for its data centers by 2030. The recent collaboration between Google and energy supplier ENGIE adds 100 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the grid, harnessed from the ENGIE Moray West wind farm in Scotland. This infusion of wind energy is expected to propel Google to a 90 percent carbon-neutral status in the UK by 2025.

The data centre incorporates eco-friendly features such as air cooling and advanced technology for the off-site reuse of generated residual heat, benefiting the local community in Waltham Cross.

In addition to environmental considerations, the construction and technical operation of the data centre aim to create new job opportunities at the local level, contributing to economic growth.

This investment is part of Google’s broader commitment to infrastructure development in the UK. Notable initiatives include the acquisition of the Central Saint Giles office in London for $1 billion in 2022, a $1 million investment in office space development in King’s Cross, London, the launch of the Accessibility Discovery Centre, and the installation of the undersea Grace Hopper cable in 2021, connecting the UK to the US and Spain.
