Elon Musk, the owner, intends to transform Twitter (now known as X) into an all-encompassing app. This forthcoming transformation will allow users to engage in video calls and transfer money to one another.
The functionalities for X were revealed by the new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, during an interview with the American TV network CNBC. According to Yaccarino, this marks the initial step in turning X into a comprehensive app.
Yaccarino supports Musk’s vision of crafting X into an app capable of accommodating various tasks. The billionaire acquired the former Twitter last year and renamed it X a few weeks ago.
“Acquiring Twitter accelerates the creation of X, the all-encompassing app,” tweeted Musk in October of last year leading up to the acquisition. Rumors suggest that he intends to establish a Western alternative to the Chinese app WeChat. While fundamentally a messaging app, WeChat is used by over a billion Chinese users daily for a wide range of purposes.
WeChat enables users to engage in online shopping, read news, apply for loans, order food delivery, and request a taxi, among other things. It serves as a hub for various types of applications, forming a “super app.”
According to CEO Yaccarino, X is set to revolve around “limitless interactivity,” encompassing audio, video, messages, and payments. She stated, “It will become a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.” Additionally, artificial intelligence is expected to play a role. The exact appearance of the new app remains undisclosed.
