Sony sued for £5 billion for abuse of power

A consumer organization has filed a complaint with a British competition Court against the Japanese electronics giant Sony for abuse of power in purchases for the Playstation game console. There have been up to 5 billion pounds of overcharged costs for software purchases over the past six years.

Alex Neill, CEO of Resolve, filed a complaint with the Competition Appeal Tribunal on August 19 on behalf of almost 9 million British Playstation customers, according to British media and the consumer organization. The complainants accuse Sony of abusing its dominant market position in digital purchases.

“Theft,” they denounce. For example, they charge the 30 percent commission on every purchase of a game or an in-game purchase through PlayStation Store. Sony’s actions cost millions to users.

According to the complaint, the case applies to anyone who has digitally purchased a game or additional content in the United Kingdom through the console or PlayStation Store since August 19, 2016. They may be eligible for compensation, according to the initiator. Without interest, 67 to 562 pounds of compensation per individual user is said to be made. A Sony spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
