Britain is experiencing one of its warmest summers ever, with temperatures expected to rise to 36°C in some regions this week. It means that there may be a shortage of vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage varieties and sprouts which need cooler climate to develop. There could also be a shortage of strawberries in the UK soon.
Jack Ward, CEO of the British Growers Association, said the growers “have never seen this combination of drought and super high temperatures”. He added that the weather has affected the cultivation of vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and onions, which “consist mainly of water”.
The drought can also lead to shortages of vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and sprouts, which growers now have to plant in order to harvest them in winter.
