100,000 electric cars sold in a month: Rho Motion

The UK’s electric vehicle (EV) market surged to an unprecedented level in March 2025, with monthly sales exceeding 100,000 units for the first time. According to data from Rho Motion, this represented a 41% year-on-year increase, significantly outpacing the European average of 22% and the global growth rate of 29%. While the UK’s EV adoption accelerates, France experienced an 18% quarterly decline following subsidy cuts, whereas Germany and Italy posted strong gains of 37% and 64% respectively.

Charles Lester, Data Manager at Rho Motion, noted that despite policy turbulence, global EV demand remains robust. He highlighted how subsidy withdrawals in France had immediately dampened sales, contrasting with the UK’s consistent growth. Meanwhile, North America struggles to match its ambitious EV targets with actual policy implementation. Lester warned that reducing incentives while supply chains face trade barriers—such as steep US tariffs on Chinese EVs—could stifle industry momentum.

China, however, continues to dominate, with Q1 2025 sales jumping 36% to nearly one million units in March alone. Rho Motion analysts suggest that ongoing Sino-US trade disputes will likely have little immediate impact on China’s domestic EV expansion.

The UK’s success stems from sustained consumer confidence and competitive pricing, even as other markets waver. With France retreating and Germany cautiously advancing, Britain now leads Europe’s EV transition—but whether this pace can withstand looming economic pressures remains uncertain.
