Demand for EV’s boosted car sales, still far from pre-COVID years

Demand for EV’s boosted car sales, still far from pre-COVID years

Demand for electric vehicles contributed to a 4.6% increase in new car registrations in the UK in September. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of registrations rose to 225,269 units in that month, up from 215,312 units a year earlier, but still remained 34.4% below pre-pandemic levels.

The car market is suffering from the pressure on the cost of living in Great Britain and the consequences of the persistent shortage of chips around the world.

“However, the overall market remains weak as model availability remains limited due to supply chain issues,” said Mike Hawes, Chief Executive Officer of the SMMT.

“While the industry is working hard to address these issues, the long-term recovery of the market also depends on strong consumer confidence and economic stability,” Hawes added.

The monthly number of registrations of battery-electric vehicles rose by 16.5% in September, although the SMMT sees slower growth for the segment than at the beginning of the year.
