The House of Lords’ report on artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked calls for increased government oversight and regulation of AI standards. Concerns have been raised about whether AI is gaining too much power.

The report, released in February, focused on generative AI and large language models, highlighting the government’s limited attention to AI safety of high quality. This lack of focus has been seen as a barrier to international competitiveness.
In response to the report, Michelle Donelan, the State Secretary for Science, Innovation, and Technology, clarified the government’s stance on AI oversight, indicating alignment with most parliamentary recommendations.
However, Baroness Stowell of Beeston, a member of the House of Lords and chair of the Communication and Digital Committee, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s position. She called for stronger measures to address copyright infringement and promote market competition in AI.
Specifically, Stowell criticized the government’s handling of copyright issues, noting the failure of previous initiatives led by the Intellectual Property Office. She stressed the importance of involving ministers in policy discussions but highlighted the need for clearer next steps.
Stowell also emphasized the importance of improved governance measures for AI standards and policy decisions. She recommended incorporating market competition as an explicit policy goal and integrating it into the design and assessment process for new policies and standards.
The UK government’s response signals a growing acceptance of regulatory reforms for AI. Recent financial scandals, such as the involvement of cryptocurrencies in criminal proceedings, have underscored the need for stronger measures to address emerging technological challenges.
Interior Minister James Cleverly highlighted the importance of preventing criminals from profiting from illegal activities, particularly through the collection of cryptocurrencies. These developments underscore the growing importance of addressing AI-related issues and implementing effective measures to ensure accountability and transparency in this rapidly evolving field.
