Keir Starmer tells about “economic black hole”, warns about coming austerity

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned the nation to prepare for a “painful” budget in October, emphasizing the need for significant spending cuts to address a substantial financial deficit. During his recent speech, Starmer highlighted that the previous Conservative government has left behind a £22 billion “economic black hole,” which he described as “worse than we could have ever imagined”.

Starmer’s Labour Party came to power in July after a significant electoral victory, ending a 14-year Conservative rule. Since taking office, the new administration has faced numerous challenges, including riots and a crisis in the prison system.

Starmer stressed that the upcoming budget will necessitate savings and that those with greater financial resources must bear a larger share of the burden. He acknowledged that unpopular measures are inevitable, cautioning that “things will get worse before they get better”.

The Prime Minister criticized the previous Conservative governments for their “populist” policies, which he argued have created “cracks in the foundations of society”. He also addressed the recent riots in the UK, which followed the stabbing of three children in Southport, attributing these disturbances to years of mismanagement under Conservative rule. Starmer pointed out the issues with overcrowded prisons, which have led to early prisoner releases, fostering an environment conducive to lawlessness.

Starmer used this opportunity to frame the forthcoming budget decisions within the context of rectifying the problems inherited from 14 years of Conservative governance. He emphasized that the current situation necessitates painful decisions to clean up the economic and societal mess left behind.

Despite the challenges, Starmer highlighted moments of community solidarity, such as when people came together to clean up after the riots, as a reminder of the nation’s core values.
