Minister responsible for food supply, Mark Spencer, has called the management of supermarkets on the mat. They must explain what they are doing to solve the shortages of fruits and vegetables.
Several supermarkets in the UK are struggling with empty racks in their fruit and vegetable department and are limiting the number of items that customers are allowed to take home. This is the case for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, among others. The shortages are also caused by bad weather in Northern Africa.
The minister says he wants to hear from supermarkets how they are tackling the problems and how they can be avoided in the future.
According to the supermarkets, the supply should be back up to par in the coming days and weeks. The UK minister responsible for the environment called on consumers last week to eat more turnips, a seasonal vegetable grown locally.
