Prominent conservatives have criticised the UK Home Secretary’s’ racist rhetoric’. In the UK, there has long been unrest about grooming gangs, gangs of young men who sexually abuse girls. Minister Suella Braverman said earlier this month that the vast majority of the gangs are made up of men of Pakistani descent.
Last week, the BBC concluded on the basis of various investigative reports that it is not clear what Origin the gang members have.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, some prominent conservative politicians have criticized minister Suella Braverman. The newspaper does not mention them by name, but among them is a minister from the government of former prime minister Boris Johnson. This minister allegedly said that Braverman is racist and intolerant. Braverman, with her rhetoric, damages the reputation of the Conservative party, according to the former minister. Prime minister Rishni Sunak is too passive towards Braverman, who is waging a ‘culture war’.
Braverman was widely criticized for her trip last month to the African country of Rwanda, where the United Kingdom wants to send asylum seekers. Prominent Islamic politician Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, a member of the British House of Lords on behalf of the Conservatives, called Braverman’s comments about the grooming gangs racist. Tahir Abbas agreed with this in his column for the side note. In it, he accused Braverman of racism and Islamophobia. Finally, Braverman caused quite a stir late this week, when she criticised British police for seizing some racist dolls in an Essex pub.
According to the former minister, Braverman is trying to play on the underbelly of a small part of the British electorate with her statements. ‘She’s not stupid, she believes she has a license to say these things because she’s not white. But the only thing her language does is exacerbate the hatred.’
