Test batch of migrants released ‘on bail’, they are free to roam

Dozens of migrants facing deportation to Rwanda have been released on bail, according to their lawyers. The UK government plans to deport the first migrants next month, pending the outcome of the parliamentary elections. The move follows the designation of Rwanda as a safe country, but the policy has faced legal challenges and opposition.

The initial deportation attempt in 2022 was blocked by a court due to safety concerns. If the Conservative Party loses the July 4 elections, the deportations may be scrapped, as the Labour Party has promised to end the Rwanda plan. The government argues that the policy is necessary to curb illegal migration.

A controversial law aims to deport thousands of migrants to Rwanda by the end of the year, with their asylum claims to be processed in Rwanda. The first flights are scheduled for July, but the plan’s success is uncertain due to the upcoming election.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reiterated his commitment to deporting migrants in July if re-elected. The law firm representing the detained migrants has secured their release on bail, citing the lack of flight risk and the negative impact of prolonged detention on their clients, many of whom are victims of torture and human trafficking.
