UK’s Pothole Crisis and the Impact of Electric Cars: A Road Maintenance Challenge

In the United Kingdom, we’re facing a right pothole crisis, I tell you! The Telegraph reports that we need nearly 14 billion quid to fill all the bloomin’ potholes in our roads. It’s like money slipping through our fingers, just like those pesky potholes in our streets! And would you believe it, mate, those electric cars seem to be making this whole problem even worse. The news lot did the math and found out that them EVs cause on average 2.24 times more wear and tear on the road surface than a good ol’ petrol car.

Our heavy vehicles, they’re causing (quicker) cracks in the road, and if we don’t get ’em repaired, they turn into potholes, don’t they? Now, we might not have much to do with the problems in the UK, but our electric cars are just as heavy as theirs. It’s quite a shocker that us electric car owners currently don’t pay any road tax.

But next year, we lot in the UK will have to pay road tax for our EVs. You know how it goes – the amount of road tax is based on the weight of the vehicle, as heavier cars cause more wear and tear. Until now, us EV drivers were exempt from road tax to encourage electric driving, but that exemption is being scrapped. Come 2026, we’ll be paying the full amount of road tax, but we still get a 75 percent discount next year.

Now, over in England, the government’s apparently considering a so-called “pothole tax” to make up for the damage electric cars cause to the road surface. Them electric car drivers would have to pay extra tax for that. But blimey, considering that our road tax here in the UK is already gonna be higher for us EV drivers, you could say we’ve got a version of that “pothole tax” already, couldn’t ya?
