A costly turbulence for Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has offered compensation to passengers injured on board last month. Their device ended up in severe turbulence, causing dozens of people to end up in intensive care and one man died. The airline now offers passengers compensation, which are up to tens of thousands of dollars.

“Passengers with minor injuries from the incident, we offered $10,000 compensation,” the airline said in a statement. Those who sustained more serious injuries have been invited to come across a compensation offer “that meets their needs.”

“Passengers whose medically has been medically determined to have sustained serious injuries, in need of long-term medical care, and seek financial assistance, are offered an advance of $25,000 to meet their immediate needs,” the statement said. Singapore Airlines says that all passengers have already got $1,000 “to cover their immediate costs when departing from Bangkok.”

The turbulence, which lasted for approximately 10 minutes, reached levels of up to 2.82 G-forces, making it one of the most severe cases of turbulence in recent aviation history. The plane dropped 54 meters within five seconds, causing people who were not wearing seatbelts to be launched from their seats.

The plane was on its way from London to Singapore and made an emergency landing in Thailand after the turbulence. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.
