Ford to fire thousands employees in the UK and Europe to meet ‘zero emission’ targets

Ford is set to cut more jobs in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, according to Benjamin Gruschka, the head of the works council of Ford’s Cologne plant. The exact number of additional job losses in Germany remains unclear, but the new restructuring plan will be in addition to a previous program. A decision is expected by the end of June, although Ford Germany has not yet commented.

Ford has already completed half of its previous restructuring plan, which involved 2,300 redundancies in Germany, reducing the workforce to 13,000 employees. The company had announced plans to cut 3,800 jobs in Europe last year due to the shift towards electric vehicle (EV) production, which requires fewer staff.

Recently, Ford announced plans to cut 1,600 jobs at its assembly plant in Valencia, Spain. Additionally, the company has stated that it will not continue producing the Focus at its Saarlouis, Germany factory after the planned 2025 end date, even if the European Union eases its zero-emission plan.
