The renowned British fashion brand Ted Baker faces an uncertain future in Europe, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain, where store closures and job losses loom large. Financial woes within the retail divisions overseeing operations in these countries have put a total of 149 jobs at risk.
Following the impending bankruptcy, these divisions may soon be placed under administration. Among the potential casualties are four stores in the Netherlands and Belgium, along with a flagship store in Spain. Additionally, seven Dutch shop-in-shops and fifteen Spanish concessions are earmarked for possible closure. The troubles stem from the termination of the collaboration between the parent company, Authentic Brands Group (ABG), and AARC, the entity managing the stores and webshop in the UK and Europe.
In a statement issued by ABG, it was confirmed that the partnership with AARC, which operated Ted Baker’s retail stores and e-commerce platform in the UK and Europe, has been terminated.
In the absence of AARC, a new independent board has been appointed to oversee operations and explore strategies to ensure the company’s future.
Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports that Ted Baker, which was rescued by ABG from mounting losses in 2022, now faces substantial rent liabilities for its portfolio of 80 to 90 high street stores in the UK. The company is considering entering a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) to address this challenge.
AARC’s bankruptcy, driven by its inability to afford rent in the United Kingdom, prompted Authentic Brands to sever ties. Presently, Authentic Brands is in search of a new retail partner in Europe to navigate through this crisis.
