Three orders less: Amazon pays million in tax while having billions in turnover

In 2019, Amazon paid some EUR 6.8 million in corporation tax in the United Kingdom, while it sold some EUR 14.7 billion in goods there. This is apparent from documents published by the British government organization Companies House.

The web giant says it pays so little tax because the profits it makes are not high either. ”

The amount you have to pay in corporation tax is based on your profits and not on your turnover,” says the company in a statement. “Our profits are still low given the competitive market in which we operate and the investments we make.”

It’s not the first time Amazon has been compromised because of the tax it pays. In France last year the company charged a tax increase to sellers using the service, whereas the tax increase was intended to improve the competitiveness of small businesses. In April, Amazon received € 294 million in tax concessions in Europe in 2019.
