Foods were in October 14.7% more expensive than in the same period last year. This is what research firm Kantar writes in the publication of its latest analysis of the sales figures of supermarkets in the United Kingdom.
Consumers in the UK are cutting back more on their groceries. Sales of private label products increased by 10.3%, while sales of branded products increased by only 0.4%. Statistics state that the shift to home-brand products is still accelerating. Sales of the most inexpensive segment of branded products increased by as much as 42%.
The price fighters Aldi and Lidl saw the greatest sales growth. Aldi was the fastest growing supermarket chain in October. Aldi and Lidl increased their sales in the past year by 22.7% and 21.5%, respectively. Their market shares were 9.2% and 7.2% respectively in the 12 weeks up to October 30.
Tesco, the largest supermarket chain in the UK, had a market share of 27.0% in the last 12 weeks to 30 October after a sales growth of 3.1%. Of the largest four supermarkets, ASDA had the largest sales growth with 5.3%. Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrison’s market shares were 14.9%, 14.3%, and 9.0%, respectively, in the 12 weeks to October 30.
