The United States and the United Kingdom are moving towards closer economic cooperation. With the so-called Atlantic Declaration, they aim to give Russia and China more counterweight.
The declaration constitutes an “action plan for the future”, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters after a consultation with US President Joe Biden at the White House. The UK and the US want to cooperate more closely in areas including energy, innovation and technology, such as artificial intelligence.
For instance, the countries want to improve supply chains for key minerals. These are needed for, among other things, the production of batteries in electric vehicles. These are important because cars made by British carmakers such as Jaguar and Land Rover will soon also be eligible for US subsidies.
Furthermore, the countries want to cooperate on safety around artificial intelligence. Its risks need to be addressed, Biden believes.
“I don’t think in the history of mankind there has ever been such a potentially profound technological change as artificial intelligence. It’s staggering.”
In addition, Sunak and Biden talked about accelerating the production of hypersonic weapons, the war in Ukraine and peace in Northern Ireland. According to the prime minister and president, the economic relationship between their countries “has not been this strong before”, BBC News writes.
Sunak promises that the declaration will lead to a stronger economy and therefore new jobs.
