Sam Altman Returns as OpenAI’s CEO

OpenAI has officially announced the return of Sam Altman as CEO, accompanied by the revelation that the company is undergoing a significant transformation in its board of directors. Altman’s abrupt dismissal by the previous board, citing insufficient transparency and openness in communication, occurred last Friday.

According to OpenAI, a “principle agreement” has been reached for Altman’s return, leading to the formation of a new “initial” board of directors featuring a new chairman and two members. Notably, one of these members, Adam D’Angelo, had also served in the previous administration. OpenAI states that the details are still being worked out. Altman expresses his affection for OpenAI and eagerly anticipates rejoining the company.

Altman’s sudden dismissal last Friday stemmed from the old council’s lack of confidence in his leadership. The co-founder’s alleged failure to consistently communicate transparently with the council was cited, although the specifics of this decision were not elaborated upon. Following this development, Greg Brockman, co-founder and former president of OpenAI, submitted his resignation. Brockman also mentions his intention to return to OpenAI.

In a parallel development on Monday, Microsoft disclosed that Altman would be leading a new AI research team within the company. Microsoft hinted at the possibility for OpenAI employees to transition if they desired. A significant majority of OpenAI employees conveyed in a letter that they would contemplate such a move if the OpenAI Board of Directors did not reinstate Altman as CEO. External pressures from investors, including Microsoft, underscored the importance of Altman’s reinstatement. Altman states that his return to OpenAI is “with support from” Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella.
