Toshiba has been attacked by the DarkSide hackers

The Japanese electronics company Toshiba has been the victim of a cyber attack. The attack has been claimed by DarkSide, the hacker group that is also believed to be behind the recent attack on the oil pipeline company Colonial Pipeline in the United States.

The hackers targeted the French part of Toshiba Tec, which makes POS systems and copiers. They would have taken information from the company.

According to Toshiba, it is only a minimal amount of data. But DarkSide reports in a statement on the darkweb that he has stolen more than 740 gigabytes of information, including passport data and other personal information.

After discovering the attack, Toshiba immediately reported it to the relevant authorities in Europe. The company also took measures by temporarily shutting down the networks and systems.

Toshiba Tec is also active in the Netherlands. The impact on the organization here is not clear. The Dutch branch was not immediately available for comment.

The hackers specialize in digital extortion and may be in Eastern Europe or Russia. The cyber attack on Colonial Pipeline had major consequences this month. The company was forced to shut down its pipelines. That led to fuel shortages in parts of the United States. The price of fuel also skyrocketed.

Sources say the company paid millions of dollars after hours to the perpetrators, who had shut down computer systems with hostage software. However, it took days for the company to get everything up and running again and the fuel supply could be resumed.
