Sainsbury to match Aldi’s prices

Sainsbury to match Aldi’s prices

Sainsbury’s, one of the leading supermarket chains with a market share of over 15%, has made a move to enhance its competitive stance, particularly as the crucial Christmas season approaches. The company has announced that it will be the first UK supermarket group to extend its Aldi Price Match scheme to its convenience stores, in addition to its existing supermarkets.

Under the leadership of CEO Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s has been implementing a strategic plan to match Aldi’s prices for over 500 products in its grocery stores. This initiative is part of the company’s “Next Level Sainsbury’s” strategy, which aims to provide customers with outstanding value, high-quality food, and excellent service. The strategy also includes enhanced offers for members of its popular Nectar loyalty program, which has been funded through cost savings. Industry data indicates that this approach has helped Sainsbury’s maintain a higher annual market share.

Starting from November 4, Sainsbury’s will offer up to 200 products at the same prices as Aldi in its more than 1,400 Local convenience stores. These products include essential items such as milk, bread, butter, pasta, rice, chicken, and tuna. This move replaces the previous “Pocket Friendly Prices” campaign and is designed to simplify the value offering across both supermarkets and convenience stores.

This expansion of the Aldi Price Match scheme is part of a broader effort by Sainsbury’s to refresh its convenience store experience. The company has recently updated store layouts and product ranges, increasing the number of products in store by 7% and adding more “food on the move” products, which are a primary focus for convenience shoppers.

While Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons also offer price matches with Aldi for some products in their larger stores, Sainsbury’s is the first to extend this initiative to its convenience store network. This strategic move is particularly timely, given the current cost of living crisis and the upcoming Christmas season, where every penny counts for consumers. Sainsbury’s will release its financial results for the first six months on November 7, which will provide further insights into the impact of these initiatives.
