Just Stop Oil activists sentenced to real prison terms for conspiring to block a motorway

Five climate activists from the Just Stop Oil group have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to five years in the United Kingdom. The activists, including Roger Hallam, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, were found guilty of organizing a blockade of the M25 motorway around London in November 2022. The blockade lasted for four days and caused significant disruptions, with over 50,000 hours of vehicle delay and economic damage estimated at nearly £750,000.

The activists were accused of conspiring to cause a public nuisance by disrupting traffic on the M25. They recruited supporters through a Zoom call, during which Hallam stated that the plan was to cause “the greatest disturbance in modern British history”. The group’s objective was to force the British government to stop oil and gas exploitation in the North Sea and ultimately abolish the use of fossil fuels.

The sentences handed down are the longest ever imposed in the UK for non-violent protests. Just Stop Oil has condemned the verdict as “an obscene perversion of justice” for “nothing more than attending a Zoom consultation”. The group argues that the harsh punishments are disproportionate to the actions taken and that the focus should be on addressing the climate crisis rather than punishing peaceful protesters.
