Mike Hawes, CEO of the UK’s automotive industry association, emphasizes the importance of the Canadian market for British car exports and expresses disappointment at the suspension of trade talks. He states,
Given the close ties between our two countries, the suspension of trade talks is particularly disappointing. This sends a signal that the UK’s high-quality automotive products are not welcome in Canada.
The impasse in negotiations primarily revolves around the agricultural market, as the United Kingdom seeks to uphold trade barriers in that sector.
Since its departure from the EU in 2020, Britain has been actively pursuing bilateral trade agreements globally. Ongoing negotiations include a free trade agreement with India.
